"Story of the Door" Reaction

while thinking about "the story of the door", something that stood out to me was the fact that Dr.Jekyll was willing to bribe the family to make sure his reputation wouldnt be damaged. if he hadnt bribed the family, they probably would have been talking about him to the rest of the town, and it would give a lot of attention (but not good attention)to him. i think that based on Dr.Jekyll's personality traits, he didnt bribe the family to keep his good reputation, i think he did it because he wants to lay low for some reason. he lives in an abandoned house, he isnt friendly, i think he just wants to keep to himself. i feel like Dr.Jekyll is so unusual, he is basically the complete opposite of what society wanted to see in that time period. it is besides the fact that he is disfigured, most people would probably be tolerant of that; i think people would be more bothered by his lack of manners and that he is very anti-social.
i cant really tell what the theme is supposed to be at this point, and i havent really seen anything that would be considered having multiple personalities, because so far Dr.Jekyll is only really mean. and so far we dont even know where mr.hyde is. i hope we discover what the theme is, or learn more about the society the story is taking place in.
